My experience
I can never remember what plastics in my household can be recycled or go to the garbage, nor the expiration dates of food in my fridge. Hoping to reduce household and food waste over the 2024 winter holidays, I tested two free apps. The first, TOWaste, is from the City of Toronto and aimed at household waste. The second is a food waste app, Fridgely. I would like to share the helpful features of these apps with you. We have an earlier post on household food waste in Canada.
TOWaste (household waste)
- Waste Wizard: A search tool to sort many types of waste
- Collection schedules and reminders: Alerts to take appropriate bins out on collection days
- Drop off depots and collection centres: Maps showing depots to deposit waste items
- Download the free TOWaste app here
Fridgely (household food waste)
- Log food purchases and expiration dates: Scan receipts or bar codes for estimates of food expiration dates
- Recipe ideas: See recipes that use ingredients in your fridge
- Coupons: Find coupons for some Canadian grocery stores
- Download the free Fridgely app here
What you can do
I found the two apps to be user friendly and helpful. Please consider using them as a personal effort to reduce waste. If you use other apps and wish to share your experience, we would like to hear from you in the comments.

Cool idea. I had never thought about this, but can see how these apps would be useful. Thanks for sharing.
